Anthracite Hills

In the winter of 2018 I visited the Coal Region of Pennsylvania, an area known for the coal mines found there in the mountains, and the towns that sprung up to support this industry. It is well-known that the coal industry has suffered setbacks in recent decades, and signs of decline are evinced everywhere in the Coal Region, perhaps nowhere more than in Centralia, the formerly thriving city that is now completely overgrown, having been abandoned after a coal mine caught fire under the town. However, I still see beauty in these places; the fact that this region is not totally empty speaks to the resilience of these people, their stubbornness and drive to make it work; ultimately, I still find the stories told in the landscape worth recording.
